I often talk about capturing moments, but this one felt different. It was the stillness that spoke to me the loudest. Imagine standing by the water’s edge in Highlands, NC, just as the sun begins to rise. The mist clings to the river’s surface, hovering in the cool air, while the vibrant orange and green leaves paint the scene in perfect autumn hues. And then, just there, tucked under the branches, you notice a white canoe. It’s almost hidden, like it’s part of the landscape, quietly waiting for someone to notice.
What I love most about the Western North Carolina mountains—especially in Highlands—is how time seems to stand still. There’s a sense of peacefulness here, like nature is offering you a moment just to breathe.
The beauty in this scene wasn’t just about capturing a reflection or playing with light; it was about feeling present. I didn’t plan this shot—it found me, and that’s what makes these moments feel so personal. It was a chance to pause and simply enjoy being surrounded by the changing colors of fall, the cool mountain air, and the moment’s stillness.
If you’ve ever been to Highlands, you know it’s more than just another mountain town. It’s one of those places where the landscape’s natural beauty wraps around you, inviting you to slow down. I ended the day with a warm meal from Highlands Pizza Place, a cozy little spot perfect for relaxing after exploring. Their pizza always hits the spot after a long day of photographing the fall colors.
But Highlands has more to offer than just stunning views and good pizza. Did you know it’s home to one of the highest towns east of the Mississippi River, over 4,000 feet above sea level? Or that it’s nestled on a plateau in the southern Appalachian Mountains, offering a unique climate that allows rare plant species to thrive? These small details make Highlands such a special place to visit and photograph.
For this shot, I used my trusted Maven Filters CPL to cut through the water’s glare and highlight the reflections’ depth. I kept my ISO low at 64, which allowed me to pull out as much detail as possible. Shooting at 150mm, f/11, with a 1.0-second exposure, gave me the perfect balance of sharpness and atmosphere, ensuring the mist and reflections played their part.
